On Engineering

this was originally posted to my defunct blog On Engineering on 7th Jan 2012

The number of technical books within the field of engineering is far greater than I can count (Google gives a number of 5 million results for the search phrase “engineering books”). Yet few are the books or even blogs about what engineers actually do. I mean on a day to day basis. Yes, we solve all the world’s problems, we turn ideas into reality, we make things and their processes more efficient, cheaper - we optimise - but what do we actually do? All day?

I have been in engineering since completing my studies and degree in Aerospace engineering at Bristol University in the 1990s. Whilst I could never claim to be a top engineer, I am good enough and thoughtful enough to be able to write about it from the perspective of an experienced practitioner. So I thought I would give it a go.

This blog is also a little test to see if I’ve been paying attention all those years…
